Mall Kiosk Layout: You Have No Front Door

A store gets a threshold, a door and a shopper who already committed. A cart gets one pass at walking pace. Arrange it for the walk-by.

The most expensive mistake on a mall cart is free to fix, and almost everybody makes it: the best seller sits dead center, at eye level, facing straight across the corridor. It photographs beautifully. It is aimed at nobody.

This is for the person who signs the license on the space and the person who stands in it for eight hours, because a mall kiosk layout has to solve two problems at once. The owner needs strangers to stop. The seller needs the ones who stop to look, reach and pay without colliding. Nearly every layout rule you have read was written for a shop with a door, and on a cart most of them invert.

A mall kiosk layout has no front door

Store layout theory rests on a threshold. A shopper crosses it, drifts through a few feet of decompression where she registers almost nothing, then turns — conventional wisdom says right — and starts to browse. All of it assumes she has already decided to be in your store.

A 10x10 kiosk gets none of that. Your customer is in motion, on her way somewhere else, and she clears your whole frontage in about the time it takes to read this sentence. You get one pass, at walking speed, in peripheral vision. So stop arranging the cart for the person standing in front of it. Arrange it for the person going past.

Chest height, not eye level

"Eye level is buy level" is the oldest line in merchandising, and the best evidence available puts the attention somewhere lower. A Journal of Marketing Research eye-tracking study put cameras on shoppers walking a real store and recorded where their eyes landed. The height with the greatest propensity to capture attention came out at roughly 14.7 inches below eye level. Chest height. That is where eyes went, not where money went — but nothing gets bought on a cart that never got looked at.

Be honest about what that study is: it ran in store aisles, not on kiosks, and nobody has published the cart equivalent. But it describes a moving shopper scanning a vertical face of product, which is closer to your situation than a stationary browser. Adult eye level runs somewhere around 59 to 65 inches depending on who is walking past. Drop 14.7 inches off that and your hot band sits near 45 to 50 inches off the floor. On most RMUs — retail merchandising units, the standard mall cart — that band is the counter surface and the riser above it, which is exactly where owners park the receipt book, the phone charger and a jar of pens.

A cart has two fronts, and neither is the middle

The same study found a lateral bias: shoppers give more attention to product on their right as they move past. In a corridor that becomes a trap, because it runs both ways. Traffic from the food court has your east end on its right; traffic from the anchor store has your west end on its right. There is no single right side — there are two approach faces, and the broadside between them belongs to nobody.

Which is why the instinctive layout is weak. Hero centered, cart symmetrical, everything aimed at the middle puts your best thing in the poorest position for both streams at once. Mirror it instead: same hero, same price sign, both ends. Then work out how the flow splits; it is rarely even. If one direction carries most of your traffic, that end earns the better product and the better light.

The counter is a wall you built yourself

The seller stands behind the register, facing out. It feels correct, and I think it is the biggest single thing suppressing your stop rate: a counter with a person behind it reads as a transaction point, and a shopper who has not decided to buy anything avoids those. She will not walk up to a register to browse. She will slow down for a table.

Open one approach side. Leave a real gap at the higher-traffic end where somebody can step in without passing the till, and stand out there yourself, beside the product. A terminal bolted to a fixed stand bolts the seller down with it. Software that runs in a browser on any tablet means the sale can close where the customer is already standing — that is why we built VoVi to run on a cart. Whatever you run, the test is: can your seller take money without walking away from the customer?

Measure the counter, too. The ADA standards for sales and service counters call for a portion no higher than 36 inches, at least 36 inches long for a parallel approach or 30 inches with knee and toe clearance if the approach is forward. A floor, not a goal — and your local requirements are yours to check. It is also the only part of your cart a customer in a wheelchair can use.

Standing at the end rather than behind the till also keeps the browsing side clear, so the person paying and the person looking are not competing for the same three feet of floor.

Leave 36 inches of nothing

An accessible route needs at least 36 inches of clear width. Borrow the number for the space around your own cart, not just the mall corridor. The argument is not compliance, it is queueing: put the pay point and the look point in the same place and two people paying will occupy exactly the ground a third needs to browse. That is how a cart looks busy on a Saturday and takes almost nothing: the fourth shopper sees a huddle, reads a wait, keeps walking. Pay at one end, browse along the long side; a queue should form parallel to your display, never across it.

Where the stock goes

All backstock under the counter, in labeled bins, on the seller's side. Face each line deep enough to clear a full Saturday — if it sells eight units on a weekend day, put eight out, not three. Do the real replenishment in whatever your dead window turns out to be — for most carts, weekday mid-morning — when almost nobody is walking past to lose. The test is whether your seller can refill a facing without turning her back on the corridor for more than a few seconds, because every restock spent facing away is a pass she never saw. On a cart, passes are the inventory.

One hero, one price, three seconds

Here is the opinionated part. Most carts carry too much signage, and the owners doing it are not careless — they are generous. Bundle, two-for, holiday hours: all of it true, none of it readable.

Somebody moving past reads your cart from ten or fifteen feet, once, while walking. In that window she absorbs one product and one number. That is the entire budget. A cart showing eleven price tags communicates roughly what a cart showing none does, and looks cluttered enough to feel like a place where you get hassled. One hero per approach face, then. One price legible across the corridor, and nothing else competing inside that 45-to-50-inch band. Write it down so it survives a shift change: a planogram on a cart is one page, or one photograph taped inside the counter door.

What to change first

  • Move your best seller from eye level into the 45-to-50-inch band, and mirror it at both ends instead of centering it.
  • Open one approach side and get the seller out from behind the till.
  • Hold 36 inches of clear path, and keep the pay point away from the browsing.
  • One hero and one price per approach face, legible at fifteen feet.

Stand across the corridor and count heads

None of this is worth much as an opinion, mine included. As a measurement it costs you twenty minutes.

Find a spot across the corridor where you can watch your own cart. Same day of the week, same time, twenty minutes, two weeks running. Tally three numbers into your phone: passes, head-turns, stops. Head-turns over passes tells you whether the cart is visible at all: a height and signage problem. Stops over head-turns tells you whether it is approachable: a counter and clear-space problem. Owners assume they have the second. Most have the first.

Then change one thing. One. Drop the hero to chest height, or open the approach end, or cut the signage to a single price — then run the identical twenty minutes next week. One variable at a time is slow, and it is the only way to know which of these is true on your corridor, with your traffic.

The corridor is not the obstacle. It is the whole business — a river of people the mall rents you access to by the month. Almost every cart in that mall is arranged for the customer who already stopped. Arrange yours for the one who hasn't.
