"Free POS" usually means one of four things

Before you compare quotes, it helps to know which kind of free you're being offered. Three of these end with a monthly invoice.

1. Free for 14 or 30 days

A trial. You migrate your whole catalogue, train your staff, and a month later the card on file gets charged. The software was never free — the onboarding effort was just prepaid by you.

2. Free until you need a real feature

The register is free; inventory counts, staff permissions, commissions or multi-location reporting live one tier up. Retailers usually hit that wall in month two, right when switching costs are highest.

3. Free with the hardware you must buy

Software is bundled with a proprietary terminal, sold or leased to you. The subscription moved into the hardware line, and now you can only run the POS on the box they sold you.

4. Free, funded by processing

The provider earns on card payments instead of software fees, so the software genuinely costs $0 forever. This is VoVi. The trade you're making is a processing rate — so the rate should be simple and stated up front.

What a free POS still costs you

  1. Card processing

    A flat 2.7% on card-present sales taken through VoVi. On $20,000 of card sales that's $540 — and it replaces both a software subscription and a separate processing bill.

  2. A card reader

    You'll need a supported reader to accept cards. That's hardware you own, not a lease, and we'll help you pick the right one during onboarding. Everything else runs on devices you already have.

  3. That's the list

    No setup fee, no per-terminal fee, no charge for extra users, extra products or extra locations. If we ever add something paid, it won't be a feature you already had.

Is a free, processing-funded POS right for you?

It's a strong fit if…

You run a kiosk, mall cart, or specialty shop; you're paying $99–$140 per location for software today; you take a healthy share of cash; or you're opening more locations and refuse to pay per store.

Do the math first if…

You process very high card volume at an already-low negotiated rate. At that point the flat $99/month plan with your own processor is usually the cheaper door — and it's the same software.

Free POS system questions

Is a free POS system actually free, or is it a trial?
It depends entirely on the provider — see the four kinds of free above. VoVi's software is $0/month with no expiry, no feature gates and no per-location fee. We earn a flat 2.7% when you process a card through VoVi, and nothing when you don't.
What features are missing from the free plan?
None. There's one version of VoVi and every store gets all of it — register, inventory, purchase orders, customers, loyalty, gift cards, layaways, store credit, commissions, scheduling, end-of-day reports and multi-location reporting. There's no premium tier to upgrade to.
What does a free POS system still cost me?
Card processing at a flat 2.7% for card-present sales through VoVi — cash, check, gift card and store credit sales cost nothing — plus a card reader if you want to take cards. VoVi runs on tablets, laptops and phones you already own, so there's no terminal to buy or lease.
How do you make money if the software is free?
Card processing. A flat 2.7% that already includes the interchange and network fees other providers itemize into confusion. If you'd rather keep your existing processor, VoVi is a flat $99/month per location instead — every feature included, no percentage to us.
Is there a contract or a minimum?
No contract, no monthly minimum, no cancellation fee. Your data is yours and exports to CSV any time.
Is the free plan limited by number of locations or staff?
No. Locations, staff accounts and products are unlimited on the free plan. If you run 20+ locations, the savings calculator stops being useful and it becomes a phone call — the software is still $0/month.
